Wordless Wednesday 28: The East Side Gallery

Continuing with lazily sharing photos from our travels earlier this summer, I bring you some art.

The East Side Gallery is a memorial on a long (1.3km) section of the old Berlin Wall and is the world’s largest open air gallery. Originally painted in 1990 (the same year most of the wall was demolished after people became allowed to cross the boundary in November 1989), the paintings were heavily damaged by vandalism and restored/partially repainted by the original artists in 2009. The vandalism continues, but the gallery is still incredible to see.

But that’s a lot of words for Wednesday. Let’s get on with the photos.

I bring you the dogs of the East Side Gallery.

For the cat people (not part of the official Gallery, but found on the back side of the wall with lots of boring graffiti)

Obviously outside the theme, but c'mon. Incredible. (And a small part of something much larger.)

Much, much larger

  1. Wow! I love it!

I’ve never been to Berlin. But one of my favorite films is set there: Wings of Desire. Even before the wall came down, much of it was graffitied and I remember some interesting images even then.

This gallery is amazing. Even if you’re not puppy spotting.

Had to look up Wings of Desire – looks very interesting! I’m sure Nic Cage didn’t do the US remake any favours (have not seen City of Angels, either).

  2. Too bad about the vandalism. The art is amazing!

  3. Mary says:

Wow…that would be awesome to see.

  4. Bailey says:

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Those are incredible paintings. It’s always a shame that people feel the need to destroy things. I guess graffiti and tagging is a worldwide problem!

I have to wonder what is in the minds of vandals when they strike out to deface something

We saw a group of teenagers writing on it when we were there. Broad daylight, lots of people around. My Husband may or may not have expressed his displeasure at this to them 😉 Didn’t change anything, though. They carried on after the uptight Canadians moved on.

  7. Wow!!!!! Those are just amazing!!!! I love graphite! So unique and beautiful, every one of them!. Even the creepy scary looking ones are cool! BOL!!!

  8. That is so interesting and beautiful…thanks for sharing.

  9. Love the street art, thanks for sharing!

  10. Amazing! Our neighborhood mural got tagged too. People were upset about it.

  11. Very cool art. Bummer that folks mess it up w/ stupid graffiti. That dog smoking in the first one reminds me… I always wondered if you taught a puppy to smoke if you could stunt its growth thereby ensuring it would stay adorable puppy-sizes. (Okay, I didn’t “always” wonder that – but I wondered it a time or two.)

  12. Taryn says:

Interesting if somewhat macabre artwork. A shame people feel the need to vandalize it.

  13. Novroz says:

    Oh wow!! Cool gratifies!!!
The last two is incredibly awesome! Whoever did it is a great artist

  14. Sue says:

    Amazing. Love it!

  15. It’s beautiful, in spite of the graffiti! Thanks for sharing it with us!

There are so many places I would love to visit, but lack of sufficient funds makes it impossible right now. So I have to settle for looking at travel magazines and TV programs. (((SIGH)))

  16. Jodi says:

That is beautiful! I did not know they did this.

  17. raisingdaisy says:

Wow there are some incredibly talented artists represented on those walls! I love the bird and the wall it’s on, that’s just amazing. Really great photos.

  18. Donna O. says:

That is an amazing memorial to have seen. And you’re right, that last “bit” of graffiti is incredible! Wonder how much time it took to paint all of that.

  19. Clowie says:

The photos are great! Some of that work is amazing.
