Wordless Wednesday 18: A Canadian Pilgrimage

In Calgary, it’s common to head west for the weekend to spend time in the mountains.

For various reasons, the Husband and I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to change it up and road trip east instead.

GPS

The GPS has a very liberal definition of “road” in rural Saskatchewan.

And then we reached a place dear to many Canadians’ hearts.

Yes, that grain elevator says Dog River!

CORNER GAS!

CORNER GAS!

I respect that international readers will have no damn clue what Corner Gas is, so I will just say it was a hilarious Canadian TV show that ran for 6 seasons and hit very close to home for many – especially those who grew up in small towns (myself included).  It’s definitely on the list of great Canadian programming with Due South and the Mercer Report.

Chili cheese dog, anyone?

Chili cheese dog, anyone?

Basically, it’s the most Canadian place you can visit, second only to our nation’s capital.

The Ruby - chili cheese dog anyone?

Have you seen my F and E?

Fingers crossed for a movie!

weren’t you guys hot out there?

    • thatjenk says:

It was a bit warm for the short teepee photo op, but the rest of the trip the prairie winds were howling and it wasn’t much over 22°C (72°F). Had some great thunderstorms, too.

This sounds like a road trip right up our Alley-Amir loves visiting this types of places. How many days did it take? Would love to know your route!

I’d highly recommend it – it’s fun to change it up and roadtrip east once in a while. And it’s Corner Gas! We had to go!
It’s about 700km – we did it in one day just along Highway 1, and camped at a Buffalo Pound Prov Park just north of Moose Jaw. There are lots of lakes and camping areas to choose from around there – lots of boating/fishing to be done. Though I wouldn’t go back to the same campground – it was nice, but no dogs allowed in the water or on the beach, which was a bummer.
Moose Jaw’s a suprisingly nice town, too, though we didn’t spend any time there. The downtown is made up of lots of gorgeous old buildings.

What cool photos! I love the sprawling landscape. And the teepee!

  10. OH WOW! The photo at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is brilliant!

  11. I never heard of that show, but I loved Due South! (It didn’t hurt the star was such a cutie!) Great photos, love the ‘big sky’ in the shots. Thanks for stopping by Pooch Smooches!

Great pictures. So is that the set for the tv show?

    • thatjenk says:

It sure is. A lot of the real town (Rouleau, SK) comprised the backdrop of the show, including the real-life liquor store/insurance agency!

Oooh, I’ll join you guys for a chilli cheese dog!! 🙂 Great adventure!

    Have fun

So jealous you took the dogs to Dog River. Your photos are hilarious! I heard that the outdoor set was still up and now a tourist attraction but I’ve never spoken to anyone who’d actually gone. I can’t think of many reasons to visit Saskatchewan, but this is one of them. Now that we are back on the prairies I’ll have to nudge the husband into taking a road trip with Shiva and I!

Love the teepee. I spent most of my life in Lethbridge so I am all too familiar with the Medicine Hat roadside wonders. Or lack thereof… 😉 Thanks for sharing your great pictures!

  19. Wow those are some beautiful photos.

It would seem Canada and the state of Tennessee have the same idea of what constitutes a road. Sadly, it doesn’t fit my definition! LOL
