Monday Mischief 5: The Peace Bridge
April 1, 2012 13 Comments
Last weekend, Calgary’s new famous (or perhaps ‘infamous’) landmark opened for public use, so I thought Moses and I should check it out.
There has been no shortage of controversy over the bridge since it was approved: the price tag ($25 million), the location, the design and build by a Spanish (instead of Canadian) company, and a routine weld inspection that resulted in major delays and extra work as a result of different requirements between Canada and Spain. It was a hot topic in municipal politics here.
So of course I had to see first hand the results of all the commotion.
I was not actually able to locate the reason why this bridge was named the “Peace Bridge”, but based on the turmoil caused in City Hall, its title is nothing short of ironic.
In any event, it’s done now and I think it looks great – another interesting piece of architecture to add to our city.
It’s a very smart looking bridge!
It is an interesting design. I like it, I think. Fabulous picture of Moses with the bridge behind him.
Thanks! They’re all just iPhone photos, since I didn’t have the foresight to bring a ‘real’ camera with me 🙂
That’s a pretty great looking bridge, maybe it will earn it’s name in the future.
I like the design…very space-age. Moses definitely adds that bit of pizzazz it was lacking! We’ve had a bridge controversy going on between Oregon & Washington that is no wheres near resolved, so I know what you’ve gone through.
The bridge looks awesome! Wow. I hadn’t even heard about this but I think it’s about time they put up something for pedestrians. Other than downtown, Calgary is not a very pedestrian friendly city and since I do not own a car, this often made things difficult for me. Controversy be danged, I think it’s a great addition. It looks like Moses agrees!
I agree – anything to be more pedestrian-friendly is a bonus, especially since the new focus here is to build “up instead of out”. Some cool architecture is also a plus!
Hey Moses, Jet here. Nice to meet you. Cool bridge ya got there, glad you investigated the situation. Mom wants me to share that you are quite handsome by the way.
Those goofy humans, they get themselves into such mischief under the heading “politics!”
Hi Y’all,
Love Moses and the bridge!
Just stopped by to catch up on your happenings and say hello! Have a great week!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Interesting that something as simple as a bridge can cause such a commotion!
The design certainly is unique and neat, and of course Moses makes it look even better:)
I think it looks cool too – especially once Moses was on it!!
Glad it’s got your seal of approval buddy 🙂
Wags,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Well, we have a bridge here that’s threatening to fall down and take hundreds of motorists with it… and the federal and provincial governments are squabbling about who should pay how much to prevent said deaths… they want to repair, not rebuild… I don’t care if they bring in a company from Mars to build it, I just wish it would be fixed!!!!
Until then, I’ll admire your engineering marvel, and the beautiful boy beside it.
